THE UK GOVERNMENT BIM 2016 MANDATE
By 2016, all centrally procured government construction projects, no matter their size, must be delivered using BIM. The BIM mandate requires you to reach Level 2 BIM, based on the BIM maturity diagram below, created by Mark Bew Richards.
Consequently, if any future work is to come from the central UK Government, then you will be need to be “BIM Enabled”. What this means is that not only do you have to be BIM aware, you also need to be able to show your understanding and capability in any bid that you submit to be in with a chance of securing the job.
The introduction of BIM requires inevitable change in the methodology applied to project design and delivery. Having the benefit of both experience and insight into the open BIM approach can make the transition smoother and quicker. Careful planning and a well-considered strategy can also greatly improve the chances of success at an early stage.
HOW READY FOR BIM ARE YOU? 2016 AND BEYOND
VECTORWORKS SOFTWARE POPULARITY
With more than half a million users around the world, Vectorworks software is a global leader in 3D design technologies for the AEC, landscape and entertainment industries.
According to results from the fifth annual NBS National BIM Report 2015, Vectorworks® Architect is the most popular software in the United Kingdom with 29 percent of respondents reporting that they use the solution from global design software developer, Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. for designing with a BIM workflow.
USERS ARE ALREADY SEEING THE BENEFITS!
“We are using 3D modelling from the outset on most projects now,” said Robert O’Leary of O’LearyGoss Architects, a 12-person firm in Bristol, U.K. that uses Vectorworks Architect for residential development, healthcare and community design. “Modelling allows us to examine design solutions in context ourselves… We also enjoy less risk of errors between different drawing types… and the ease of generating plan sections and elevations once a change is made.”
Luke Bray of Axiom Architects, a firm spread across several offices in the U.K., added, “Whilst we are only taking our first few steps into the world of BIM, Vectorworks’ BIM capabilities have allowed us to progress fairly smoothly from our previous 2D working into 3D without the need to learn new software packages or suffer problems of compatibility moving from one CAD platform to another.” Axiom Architects’ 35 employees focus on the hotel and leisure, commercial, residential and education sectors.
