Microstation hints & tips
Opening a Reference in a New Session of
MicroStation V8 XM Edition
As well as being able to exchange into a reference
in MicroStation, in V8 XM Edition, you can also open
a reference for editing in a new session. This means
that the original file into which it is referenced
remains open on your PC, and the reference is opened
with a new session of MicroStation. Following this
workflow you can perform edits on the reference and
then close it and return to the file you were originally
viewing it from without having to switch back and
forth between them.
To open a reference in a new session, you can either:
Right-click on the reference in the References dialog
box and select “Open in New Session”
Select Tools > Open in New Session from the References
dialog box menu bar

Or…
Position the cursor over an element in the reference
and invoke the reset pop-up menu. Select “Edit
Reference”.

Having edited the reference and exited out of the
new session of MicroStation, when you return to the
original session of MicroStation you’ll notice
that the status column in the References dialog box
indicates that the reference has been updated and
requires reloading.
